My name is Lisa Brown;
I started this agency because of my own frustrations with
finding quality web traffic. I'm a life coach and professional speaker.
Several years ago, like most people, I saw that the internet was the future
of my business. Even though getting traffic and online marketing
wasn't my main area of expertise, for my business to work, I needed
people to find me - and that meant traffic.
At first I tried delegating my traffic to consultants.
What a gong show.
The first one I hired charged me $1,000 a month to manage my PPC
campaigns. Looking back I'm pretty sure he spent about 10 minutes a month
on my account. Every month for seven months I lost money, and every time
I would talk to him about it, he'd say, "Want me to pause
the campaigns for a couple of months?" That was his solution
to losing his clients' money - giving them a couple of months
to save up more money to lose on their PPC campaigns. I got
the feeling it worked with a lot of his clients.
The next PPC consultant I hired was turning around and outsourcing
my account to offshore workers but not telling me. This time I was
losing money because these workers were targeting the wrong audience.
I only found out by accident what was going on when they
made the mistake of forwarding a report to me directly.
In frustration I took a break from PPC. Instead I hired an expensive SEO
consultant and paidher monthly. Every month for a year I created massive amounts of content
(audio, written, and video) and sure enough, we eventually
ranked for the keyword we had selected. I had a great
sales funnel in place for this niche and it should have been
a great strategy. Problem was, this keyword was not
getting nearly enough volume to justify the SEO investment.
My consultant had neglected to mention this crucial variable.
Looking back, it seems like an easy thing that I should have spotted.
But, truth be told, I was not paying enough attention to traffic
to figure even obvious stuff like this out.
I had even more experiences than these, but you get the idea.
I was so frustrated. I knew I had to get traffic but it seriously
felt like a unicorn.
At first I felt a bit like a victim.
I'd read online about gurus who were getting millions of people
on their list by doing JVs.
They were making traffic look so easy, while I was struggling.
My spouse used to joke that I didn't know the "secret handshake"
and until I did, I would never get any traffic.
At this point I decided to take control.
Even though I felt like a fish out of water, I decided to
get my fingers in the dirt.
What happened next probably saved my online business.
The first thing I did was sacrifice almost all of my leisure
time.
Since I had a four year old and a one year old and am a very
hands on parent, I had to get creative.
I implemented a very strict routine. Twice a day (5:00 am and 7:00 pm)
I exercised for an hour while watching videos about all things traffic.
I bought all the training programs from all the best experts.
Over time I realized that SEO, content marketing,
and PPC are great and we should all use them.
But these methods require a sizable investment of time to understand
and an up front cash flow to make work.
So how do you get there if you are either a newbie, have little
to no cash because you are bootstrapping it, or have other constraints?
The main challenge I had was time poverty. I was serving the clients and
creating online courses. Both of these were huge time vampires. Oh, and there
was also the issue of running the operational and
financial parts of my business.
Sound familiar?
Managing a complex traffic source was adding another "ball in the
air" and I was certain it would get dropped.
At the time I happened to stumble upon a book written by Mark
Ford of Agora Publishing called Ready, Fire Aim: From Zero to
100 Million Flat.
If you aren't familiar with Agora, they are the 800 pound gorilla in
the financial newsletter niche.
Mr. Ford revealed that Agora initially grew their
business by buying PPC names.
He doesn't say a lot about the specifics, but it's clear they
started out by buying access to targeted BUYER traffic first.
In other words, they skipped steps like creating content or learning
complicated algorithms from publishers like Google Adwords.
They didn't even bother creating their own products. That came
later when they had more resources. They simply gave people who
were already buying financial training programs a free subscription
to their financial newsletter.
I decided that if a strategy was good enough for Agora, it was
good enough for me.
I found a website who had a very targeted list of subscribers.
We worked out a deal whereby I paid them to advertise once a week.
It was very inexpensive - if memory services, about $64 a month.
We got a flood of excellent buyer traffic, and my online business
was off to the races.
If this is something you are interested in, we would love to help you.
I firmly believe I paid a huge price for not learning this lesson
earlier. I'd love to save you from having to pay it too.
We can answer all your questions here. Please do get in touch
because we'd love to hear from you.
Warmly,
Lisa.
